Rhiannon has been playing and
Magic: the Gathering for the better part of
5 years and is always eager to help people
get into this hobby! For this course,
she will be teaching the very basic
concepts in order for her students
to understand the mechanics,
rules, and terminology of the game.
Magic: the Gathering
first launched in 1993 and grows in popularity every
year! Kids who learned the game from Twilight Comics
all those years ago look forward to sharing the game
with their kids! There are many “hidden” benefits to
learning the game, Magic: the Gathering.
The bonds created through Magic are long lasting.
Friendship is one of the most important values that
the game can bring to any individual. The majority
of Magic players often travel with a group of
friends to local events or a bigger event called a
During any given game of Magic you are using lots of
mental energy while constantly thinking of ways to
defeat your opponent. You are doing arithmetic,
observing the battlefield, predicting what cards
your opponent could have, and determining why the
opponent made a specific play. Every game is a great
exercise for anyone that wants to solve questions
that involve hidden information.
DEVELOPING A LOVE FOR
Every kid is different, but learning how to play
Magic can open up a totally different way for the
brain to process information. Reading the cards and
rules is a important part of the game. It’s easy to
fall in love with reading because of Magic. There
are many articles to be found about Magic as well!
Many great fiction novels have been published with
the lore behind Magic and its characters.
Learning sportsmanship at a young age can be difficult. When
you lose a game of Magic, it’s not because your teammate
missed a three point shot, it’s entirely on you. A lot of
Magic players learn how to be gracious in defeat. Taking
every loss as a learning opportunity will make you strive to
get better. At a later stage in Magic you develop the
ability to be gracious when you win.
UNDERSTANDING MONEY AND THE VALUE OF YOUR BELONGINGS
Magic is also a collectible trading card game. You may have
to get your cards through doing chores, trading, or by
winning local tournaments for store credit. Cards have
monetary value but not every card is worth the same amount.
You’ll learn that things in life have different values.
You’ll start to appreciate the value of your collection
which makes you less likely to lose them. It gives you a
feeling of accomplishment that you acquired your collection
through hard work.
